Ossification of the Ligamentum Flavum Misdiagnosed as Lumbar Radiculopathy
Kim Jong-Won

Kim Jin-Uk
Abstract
Ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) is an eminently treatable condition if diagnosed early. We report a case of OLF misdiagnosed as lumbar radiculopathy. A 63-year-old female patient presented with tightening and tingling sensation on the soles of both feet that had been ongoing for 5 years. For these symptoms, she had undergone surgical and repetitive conservative treatments for the lumbar spine including orthopedic surgery for tarsal tunnels, which could not relieve her symptoms. She was ultimately treated successfully with removal of both cervical and thoracic OLF. Cervical or thoracic OLF should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all patients presenting with uncontrolled symptoms even when the symptoms resemble lumbar radiculopathy.
